VAN ALSTYNE, Texas (KTEN) — The residents of Van Alstyne have been waiting for the debut of Central Social District Park for four years.
Even though it's not quite yet finished, the city went ahead with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday to avoid the heat that comes along with the summer months.
"It will be a great opportunity for people all over the community to come together and enjoy a lot of different activities," said Mayor Jim Atchison.
Concerts, auctions, services and festivals already on the calendar of events at the park, with spots filling up throughout the year.
"We're organizing a Wine and Jazz festival on April 30th," said Tom Busch, owner of Cooley Bay Winery. "It will be the first event held at this park."
"We're super excited to bring not just music and entertainment, but socialization to our community, and have a central location for that," added Kandi Hessel, the city's event coordinator.
Before that wine festival there will also be an Easter Sunrise Service on the April 17. Several business owners are sponsoring the park, hoping to encourage growth.
"We now have the people and place to be able to control the growth in such a way that is very beneficial to the town," said Braddock Chiropractic owner Caleb Braddock. "To the people, to the new people that are coming."
Another benefit: The venue can also be used for private events.
"The park's available as well; people want to plan some outdoor events," said Atchison. "They can talk to our city events coordinator and establish their own schedule and events as well."
